Travel Information for Austria - Passports, Language and Money (Currency)

Passports and Visas Austria is a member of the European Union (EU) and nationals of EU member states may enter the country with an official identification card. Visas may be required for nationals of some non-member states, but visitors with a valid Schengen visa may travel without a separate Austria visa.

For travelers from North America, a valid passport is the only requirement for stays of up to 90 days. Visas and inoculations are not required.  Language Austria’s official language is German. However, English is the second-most common language. Most Austrian’s understand English and those in the travel industry usually speak it quite well. Money Austria’s official currency is the EURO. Austria’s National Tourist Office recommends exchanging money at banks rather than hotels and stores to receive the best rates. Traveler’s checks are widely accepted, as is Visa and Mastercard. American Express and Diner’s Club are also accepted in many places, however, be sure to have enough cash handy to cover bills at places that may not accept credit cards. ATMs are widely available and are called Bankomat. You will want to check with your local bank to see if you will be able to withdraw money in Austria.
