Vienna is also home to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a must-see for any visitor. Dating from the 1200s, with major construction in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, the cathedral is a living piece of history unlike any other. From the magnificent towers to the gloomy catacombs, St. Stephen’s Cathedral offers a unique glimpse of Viennese culture.
Schonbrunn Palace is also located in Vienna. With 1,500 rooms, the palace towers the surrounding zoo, coach museum, cafes, theatre and concert hall. A short 22-room tour of the palace is available, as well as a longer 40-room tour.
To experience the culture of Vienna, you only need stop in one of its many coffee houses. Much like pubs in England, they play a central role in Viennese social life. The Danube River is also an ideal place to soak in Viennese culture, both recent and past. The Prater Amusement Park and the Danube Tower offer visitors a chance to enjoy the city’s famous river.
For those who like to shop, Vienna has Gasometer Town, a unique shopping experience built inside four 24-story 100-year old gas tanks. Gasometer town, or g-town, has more than 70 shops, restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as a vinotheque, or wine cellar.
