Vienna Opera Guide

The long-standing Vienna Opera began its own reign under Emperor Leopold I, who happened to be a composer as well as a ruler for almost half a century. The Vienna Opera is the longest running German Language production in the world running since the early nineteenth century.

The Vienna Opera house has an interesting history. Because opera has always been popular in Vienna, the opera house has afforded much attention and expense. Re-built for the first time in 1857, the opera house was meant to be the grandest building in Vienna. A contest was held in order to find the best design for the new opera house. The winners began construction with a Romantic theme which caused quite a stir. Both architects died before the building's completion in 1869.

During World War II the Opera house was once again demolished, this time by bombs rather than loving hands. It was re-built, faithful to the original designs, and opened again ten years later in 1955.

Today the gorgeous and ornate Vienna Opera house still holds performances almost daily, and is visited by thousands every year who wish to enjoy a beautiful performance in an arguably even more beautiful building.
