Island Beaches Croatia Guide Best Beaches in Croatia

Croatia is a coastal country, and along is lengthy Aegian Coastline sit nearly 2,000 small islands. Though most of these islands are small and uninhabitable, there are dozens which can be enjoyed for their beautiful beaches and resorts. The following are some short descriptions of the Croatian islands which are most popular with tourists for their great scenery, fun and beaches.

The biggest group of islands are the Brijuni islands; a group of fourteen islands which make up a National Park. These islands are easily accessed from the mainland by daily ferries from Fazana. These islands are known for their lush Mediterranean greenery and the wild animal park. Hotels and camping are available on the biggest island; Veliki. The beautiful beaches of the Brijuni islands were kept secret from the public for years as President Tito used them as his private vacations spot.

The island of Cres is less popular than the Brijuni islands; but has a beauty all its own and, of course, gorgeous beaches. The second largest island in the Adriatic, Cres covers 155 square miles of land. Cres was occupied by the Italians during the 15th and 16th centuries and has a very Italian feel, in both the architecture and the culture. Some nature-lovers travel to Cres to visit the Eco Centar Kaput Insulae in which lives a protected population of the Eurasian Griffon vulture.

Neighboring Cres, Losinj is smaller but more popular with visitors than its powerful neighbor. Similarly ruled by the Italians, this island also has a very Italian feel but is generally greener than most of the Croatian islands and is said to be home to the most harbor in the Adriatic Sea; that of the town of Mali Losinj. The beaches of Cikat bay are world renowned and are perfect for windsurfing.

The island of Krk is the largest in the Adriatic, covering 157 square miles of land. Krk is well set up for tourists with numerous resorts, tourist offices, tours and water sports. In the town of Krk you will find the famous seat of the Krk bishop, St. Mary's Cathedral. The island of Krk actually has its own airport with daily flights arriving from London and throughout Europe.

In addition to the highly tourist-accessible islands listed above, there are, literally, thousands of islands in Croatia's Adriatic archipelago. You will find that you can take ferries to many of the islands for day trips and enjoy a wide variety of beautiful beaches on what might be your best beach holiday ever.
