Travel Dubrovnik Guide
The Southernmost city in Croatia, Dubrovnik is called the "Jewel of the Adriatic". With a history of successful trade; Dubrovnik was once the envy of Venice and was one of the most successful ports in Europe until its independent Republic was crushed by Napoleon. With a Mediterranean feel, romance and excellent food; Dubrovnik has long been well loved and fondly remembered by the likes of George Bernard Shaw and other famous visitors.
Old town Dubrovnik is home to the Onofrio Fountain, dating back to the fifteenth Century and the Franciscan Monastery which is one of Europe’s oldest continually functioning pharmacies (in business since 1391). In fact, many of Old Town Dubrovnik's buildings date back more than 500 years and simply walking the streets can feel like a journey through history. The entrance to the Old Town is made through Pile Gate. Inside the gate you will find the popular town center which lies near the Orlando Column.
Visit the Sponza Palace and St. Blaise, the famous Baroque church. The Rector's Palace has been converted since its erection in 1441 into a city museum which houses Dubrovnik and other Croatian artifacts and works of art. The city square, Gunduliceva Poljana, is adjacent to the palace and hosts the morning outdoor market in which one can purchase local foods and goods, or merely take a stroll through the colorful vendor's stands and sample the edible delicacies. Nearby the square is the old town port where one can visit the ancient city walls which were constructed in the 13th Century and have remained surprisingly well-preserved.
Dubrovnik also hosts a yearly summer festival with music and dance performances and local theater productions. The Dubrovnik International Film Festival, held each October, is a destination for Central European film makers and aficionados. Dubrovnik can be reached by bus from Zagreb and Split and from Trieste Italy by train. Dubrovnik is a fun city for travelers to Croatia and has much to offer in the realm of tourist services; including one of Central Europe's widest selection of accommodation. Visit Dubrovnik soon, you will be sure to enjoy your stay.
