Travel Hvar Guide
Hvar has been called one of the most beautiful islands in the world. A sunny island in the Adriatic off of the Coast of Croatia, this lush Mediterranean paradise's uniquely accessible location has given it a rich and ancient history. Hvar is characterized by a mixture of local cultures, small fishing villages, vineyards, lavender fields and the production of some of the world's best olive oil. The mild climate makes Hvar a year-round destination for those seeking both adventure and relaxation in a gorgeous landscape.
Central Hvar is home to some high quality vineyards in which there is a strong dedication to making wine the old-fashioned way. Hvar's climate makes for great grape growing, and Hvar's desert wines and deep red wines are particularly appreciated throughout the wine world.
Visit Wines Hulic, Jelsa bb (+385 (0)21/761 409), this particular winery specializes in Jaruh, an aphrodisiac white wine made from a specialized ancient method involving dried yellow grapes. Take a tour of Bastijana doo, Mina b.b (+385 (0)21/768 430) where Mr Andro Tomić will offer you dessert wine Prošek Hectorovich, a local favorite.
Since the development of "The Hygienic Society" in 1868, the first tourist board in all of Europe, Hvar has been touted as a place to restore your health. The island's mild climate and the growth of such naturally medicinal plants such as lavender, rosemary and chamomile make even the air pure and healthy. Hvar is home to numerous spas and health retreats as this is the first reason tourists visited the island.
Hvar is also a popular destination for nudists. There is a nudist camp on the island, the Vrboska, and many designated nudist beaches. Because may of Hvar's beaches are in isolated inlets, accessible only by taxi boats, naturists feel comfortably far from civilization. The islet of Zecevo is a well-known nudist destination and can be reached in 15 minutes by ferry from Jelsa. The 11 island in the island group called the Pakleni Otoci provide an expansive amount of coastline for naturist tourists and can be reached easily by taxi boat from the town of Hvar.
As you can imagine, the pristine climate combined with the Mediterranean atmosphere and the abundance of accessible fishing spots make Hvar a haven for food lovers. Fresh fish served in the local restaurants is cooked expertly and delicately with fresh local spices. Vegetables are never over-cooked here, as the gastronomical influence is heavily biased towards Italy; rather than Croatia's Eastern neighbors. Vegetables grow easily here and are always fresh and carefully cooked to perfection.
If the beauty of Hvar isn't reason enough to visit, maybe the wine, food, cliff diving, rock climbing, hiking, boating and health retreats will give you a reason to come to Hvar on your next holiday.
