Travel Czech Republic Guide

Like many of the nations of central Europe, the Czech Republic has undergone a great deal of change in its ethnic and political makeup over the past century. Forced into the uncomfortable combination nation Czechoslovakia in the turmoil following World War I, the two countries were nearly eighty years able to peacefully extricate themselves, with much less strife than Yugoslavia.

The Czech Republic enjoys a very strong national culture, which has helped this violence-hating country avoid the bloodshed its previously rocky political standing may have otherwise caused. A nation known for its intellectual and artistic streak, the Czech Republic reached its current status as an independent nation in part through the "Velvet Revolution," so named because of its notable lack of violence as well as its namesake being the seminal rock group The Velvet Underground, a favorite listen among Czech revolutionary thinkers.

Václav Havel, as the Czech Republic's first president, embodies these ideals. A frequently jailed firebrand playwright long before he found a calling in politics, Havel has been an outspoken proponent of democracy around the world following his government service, and during his time as president saw fit to give Frank Zappa an official role within his government. Things have only been on the up for the Czech Republic since then, with its 2004 accession to the EU and rising economy making the country more and more attractive to visitors. It's no secret that Prague is currently one of Europe's hottest cities, but those who spend some time plying the Czech Republic's lesser-known highways and byways are sure to find their investment healthily returned.

If you think one of the Czech Republic's relaxing spa towns sounds like a good way to while away a week, you're in good company. Some of Europe's most respected artists and intellectuals have thought just the same thing, with the likes of Goethe and Beethoven having been in the habit of dropping by for a dip. Since before the dawn of the nineteenth century, the Czech Republic has been recognized as one of Europe's premiere spa destinations. With royalty from England and Russia having both sought the relaxation and retreat afforded by one of these lovely spa communities, it's clear that all of the best people can be found in the Czech Republic's spas. These spa towns offer therapy for many chronic conditions as well as simple relaxation.

On your way to a spa town you will certainly see some of the continent's most beautiful scenery. Whether you're headed to the rolling plains of Bohemia or hitching up your boots and putting the car in gear for a mountain climb, your spa location is sure to be the very picture of tranquility. Largely spared the destructive power of the big guns of the century's major wars, the Czech countryside is replete with well-preserved castles and chateux. These ornate and elegant buildings are welcome sights along the back roads of the Czech Republic. In between these buildings, which tend to draw tourists, are many small towns where people live a semi-traditional lifestyle, with some local economies and societies still grounded in agrarian rather than industrial principles and organizations.

For the Western traveler, the Czech Republic is a pleasingly affordable and relaxing destination. While it is readily accessible by air, many of those who come to encounter the charm and mystery of old Bohemia take a more old-fashioned overland route. Traveling by train not only allows visitors to take in breathtaking vistas, but they can easily travel through a loop of train tracks that will expose them to the best of central Europe. Whether as part of more extensive travel or a destination unto itself, the Czech Republic is a destination that defies expectations and rewards those who choose to visit.
