Travel Prague Guide

Prague, or "Praha" as the locals call it, is swiftly surpassing Paris in renown and acclaim. While the City of Lights descends into suburban doldrums and slums brimming with racial violence, Prague has put its tempestuous history well behind itself and is embracing the "new Prague," which is based on a society of ideas.

The fundament beneath this colorful city's outward brilliance is surely the diamond hard, diamond bright character of the Czech people. Following the expulsion of the German population following World War II, and the 1990's dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic now enjoys a population that is 90% Czech. With the dark mantle of Sovietism lifted from the Czech people's shoulders, the Czech Republic, and its shimmering capital, Prague, now represent the best of central Europe. The city has done well since accession to the European Union, and the nation's economy, unlike that of other central European nations such as Hungary, has flourished in the new economic community.

With Prague tourism at record levels, growing expat scenes and increasing internationalization give the city a metropolitan flair rarely found in this region of the continent. Signs of the times are very much in evidence in this dark city, where the young elite are congregating to carry out their esoteric designs and Bohemian lifestyles. This insurgent counter culture has nestled nicely within the gothic architecture and famously picturesque locales.

A square that was once the site of public executions is today a bustling space for art and commerce, with portrait artists and architects studying and working amidst flower and fruit markets. The golden, inviting light of a café yields to sheltering warmth from the winter chill, and the cold faces from the street are transformed by the passion of intellectual discourse. Prague is a city that remains romantically austere despite the intimacy and kindness of its people, and everywhere is the city's revival of its glorious past apparent.

Prague's many large public parks and famous bridges nicely complement the many outdoor concerts that take place in this city. Prague welcomes the best of Europe's classical music, and Russia's most famous compositions and most talented musicians are also frequently found here. More and more bands touring Europe see Prague as a necessary stop on their tour schedules, finding that the musical climate in this city is ripe for creativity and innovation, and jazz, rock and electronic acts know Prague is an invigorating date to play.

In addition to resident musicians re-firing their creative kilns, the visual arts thrive in Prague. Scores of museums housing both the classics and daringly cutting edge modern art are readily accessible. The ethereal light in this central European capital falls enchantingly on its buildings of diverse design, and the Czech knack for balance and elegance of arrangement makes the entire city a visual feast.

For the not-so-culture-vulture traveler, Prague also offers plenty of more pedestrian pleasures. Among them are traditional tea rooms and world-class shopping. A few days in Prague allows the traveler to paint with many colors, indulging his or her inner rock star and royal self, while also sampling some of the best of what European culture has to offer.
