Travel Estonia Guide
Estonia is an ancient, yet quickly modernizing country. Settled since 2,500 BC, Estonia has a long history and a wealth of resources due to its unique location between Eastern and Western Europe. A beautiful country which is quickly gaining popularity with Europeans as a summer and retirement destination, Estonia is said to be a "cool country with a warm heart". There are still endless discoveries to be made of Estonia's beauty and potential.
Estonia is a coastal country, and lies along the Baltic Sea. Estonia is a neighbor to Sweden, Finland, Latvia and Russia and though it lies very far North, the gulf stream results in a relatively mild climate. Estonia is primarily a farming country, and the land is filled with lakes, rivers and bogs. Estonia has a very small population, about 1.3 million people, and few immigrants. The native language is Estonian, though many younger Estonians also speak English, and many older Estonians speak Russian or German. Estonians are internationally known for being tall, blond and healthy; it must be the brisk weather.
Though summers in Estonia are short, they are lovely. Once can even swim in the Baltic. Estonia is filled with ancient stone buildings and villages and gorgeous countryside. Though there still exist remnants of the Soviet-era; Estonia is believed to be the best-recovered former Soviet Nation with a strong hold in the European Union and a highly capitalistic economic system. People often find the people, climate, look and feel of Estonia to be similar to that of neighboring Finland; but with an older and more exotic feel.
Estonian food is similar to German and Scandinavian food with popular dishes such as blood sausage, sauerkraut, and Russian-influenced cuisine which includes potato salads and dried fish. Because of the weather, Estonians pickle their vegetables in the Autumn, and enjoy these throughout the winter. In addition to these aforementioned delicacies you will find a good share of wild game and fresh fish to be had in Estonian eateries.
Estonia is considered the hidden jewel of the European Union. Estonia's kind people, strange weather, the tendency of every farm house to have its own sauna, the many dramatic islands and islets and the ancient culture all make this a fascinating and inviting country.
