Travel Brittany Guide: for France visitors
Brittany is situated on the peninsula in the northwest corner of France. It includes five departments Côtes-d’Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan. At north it borders on the English Channel, at east it borders on Pays-de-la-Loire, at south it borders on Bay of Biscay and at west it borders on the Atlantic Ocean. The capital city of Brittany is Rennes. The economy of this region is based on fishing, farming and tourism being fishing the most important among them.
The western coastline of Brittany is characterized by cliffs, islands, rocks and reefs. The region is also distinguished by the existence of small villages and towns. There is one city, Rennes and the others are not big urban centers: Brest, which is a French naval base, and Lorient, which is an important fishing center.
The culture and environment of the region is Celtic rather than French due to historical and geographical factors. The climate is comparable to that of the south west of the United Kingdom. There are many tourist attractions in this region such as the history, the landscape, etc.
The beaches in Brittany are incredible and really attractive. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the region are: La Baule which is located in the south east of Brittany; Dinard; Perros Guirec which is located on the Pink Granite Coast; St. Cast and Audierne.
Departments
Côtes-d'Armor was created in 1790 and it is located in the northern part of Brittany. There are four boroughs: Dinan, Guingamp, Lannion and Saint-Brieuc which is the capital of Côtes-d'Armor. The production of fruits, oats, potatoes and wheat are to the economy of the region.
Finistère is located in the west of Brittany. The capital city of this department is Quimper and it is situated on the south. It is an important tourist center. There are four boroughs in Finistère: Brest, Châteaulin, Morlaix and Quimper.
Ille-et-Vilaine is characterized by being flat; there are forests, dunes and marshes. The capital is Rennes which is placed in the center of the department. There are four districts here: Fougères, Redon, Rennes and Saint-Malo.
Morbihan,whose capital city is Vannes, has as it principal economic activities agriculture, fishing and tourism. The other districts are Lorient and Pontivy. Lorient is a naval port and there submarines are built.
