Cannes is situated in the French Riviera on the southern coast of the country. This town is best known for the International Film Festival that takes place there every May. Apart from glamour and charm, the festival brings the city worldwide recognition. In addition to this, Cannes is the second most important city in the country due to its tourist value. The city of Cannes started as a small fishing town on the south coast of France. This region enjoys a hot and dry Mediterranean climate.
There are many attractions in Cannes for example you can visit some of the many museums in the city.
The Castre Museum which is located on the top of Le Suquet. There you can see a display of paintings dating back from the nineteenth century made by local artist. There is also a collection of musical instruments and Mediterranean and Middle Eastern relics.
Another interesting museum is the Musee de la Mer which puts on display a collection of underwater archeology and antiquities related to the prison system. The most important exhibition in the museum is the presentation of the man in the iron mask. The museum is situated in the Fort of St. Margarite Island which is about 1 km from Cannes.
The main attraction in Cannes is La Croisette which is a seaside promenade whose beaches extends along 12 km. At the end of this promenade the Palais des Festival is situated where the International Film Festival takes place. You can have a great view of La Croisette from Le Suquet which is the highest point in Cannes’s Old Town.
Although the city is best known for the film festival and it is often associated with celebrities and fame, the existence of monks on the island of St Honorat brings spirituality to the town. There, the monks have been living since AD410 and now they devoted their time to paying and producing red and white wines, honey and lavender oil.
You can also get pleasure from excursions to different nearby places. For example, if you love perfumes you can go on an excursion to Grasse. This place is the capital city of the perfume industry and it is situated 16 km from Cannes. There are 300 factories but just a few of the factories are open to the public.
Going shopping is another reason for going to Cannes. There is ashopping mall in the city and you can buy at the many shops located on La Croisette. There are some international chains there such as Gucci, Ferrari, Christian Lacroix as well as local shops.
