Travel Berlin Guide
Germany's Capital city, Berlin is a favorite weekend destination of many European travelers. Rich in attractions, museums, shopping and curry wurst; this modern city is an interesting blend of old and new, with history it wishes to share and that which it wishes to forget. Come to Berlin to see the German side of the story and you might come away with a new perspective.
Berlin's main attraction may be the Reichstag. This home to the German parliament is open to visitors and houses a glorious glass dome with a spiraling platform which allows viewing all the way into the top. The building was designed by architect Sir Norman Foster and was meant to open up viewing of the German parliament; a symbolic cleansing of the Government.
Checkpoint Charlie at the Museum Haus was originally the crossing point between East and West Germany. Now a museum of the Berlin wall, this site houses documents and stories of escapes from Eastern Germany. Though the checkpoint itself has been torn down, you can get your passport stamped at this popular attraction, as well as visit the museum and buy souvenirs at the memorialized former location of this notorious stretch of ground.
The "East Side Gallery" is the name given to the longest stretch of the Berlin wall still surviving. This length of wall has been painted on extensively by international and German artists on the Eastern side. The Western side of the wall sits on the beach of the River Spree and is a popular sunning and swimming spot in the summer; odd for a place that was an un-touched no-man's land in our own lifetimes.
The German-based Bauhaus movement of the 1920’s was a merging of art and industry. Berlin's Bauhaus museum was built in the 1970’s in honor of this very German artistic movement. The building which houses the museum was designed by famous Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius and includes interactive and fun pieces throughout.
The Holocaust Memorial near Brandenburg Gate in the city center appears, at first, as merely an abstract stone art installation. This series of concrete pillars vary in size over a large stretch of uneven ground. Designed by Peter Eisenman; the memorial is meant to be interactive. Enter the pillars with your friends and family and you will find yourself quickly separated from them, and lost in a maze of stone. This experience of loneliness is meant to represent the feeling of the Jews as they were separated from their families and led to their imprisonments. While the experience is far from horrific, it is a symbolic attempt at the German government to acknowledge the Holocaust which has been met with mixed feelings.
Berlin is the world's capital city for electronic music. There is no shortage of all-night dance clubs, S&M clubs and, of course, traditional beer houses. At many pubs you will find that you can sit down to a hefty dinner of sausage, dark bread and sauerkraut. While Germany is not traditionally appreciated for its cuisine, do not forget the German bakers who produce some of the most delicious whole grain breads and pastries in all of Europe.
Any trip to Germany is incomplete without at least one weekend's stay in Berlin. For inter-European travelers, flights to Berlin are frequent and affordable. Berlin is a fun and interesting place for young and old and its turbulent history has strengthened its resolve to become a welcoming place for visitors from all over the world.
