English Garden Munich Guide Park in Munich

This famous 900-acre park sits in the middle of the city of Munich. The English Garden, or "Englischer Garten" is one of the largest municipal parks in the world and is bigger than Central Park in New York. The park stretches from the middle to the Northernmost border of the city and is home to many different buildings, trails and sights.

The park was founded in 1789 by the Count of Rumford. It is called the "English Garden" because of the landscaping style that was used, and that was popular in the United Kingdom at the time.

The northern side of the park is called the "Hirschau" and is home to two of the park's most famous features; its beer gardens which contain the Hirschau at either end. The landscape of the Hirschau resembles a small German forest.

A large lake can be found in the interior of the park. The Kleinhesseloher lake was built in 1800 and contains three islands. One can rent paddle boats on the lake and take them to the islands, on one of which there is a large beer garden.

Inside one of the larger beer gardens you will find a large Chinese pagoda. There is also a Japanese Tea garden, a children's carousel and even a model of a Greek temple. On top of these family attractions, the English gardens are known for the allowance of nude sunbathing, which is very popular.

Every one of the English Garden's many square Kilometers is packed with fun and activities. A spectacular park in a spectacular city, the English Garden is like a world in itself.
