Transport London Guide

London is a populated city where everyday millions of people use public transport to go to work or get to their destination. This has turned it compulsory for the city to own an important and structured transport network to allow for the proper circulation of citizens. Apart from this, London is a tourist city which receives millions of visitors all year round. Consequently, the city needs to be prepared to let tourist move freely and without any kind of inconvenience.

The options are vast as one would expect in a cosmopolitan city as this one. One of the principal means of transport is the Underground (or also called Tube) which is expanding day by day and can get you to most parts of the city. In London, there is an underground station in almost every area of the city. This method is the fastest in the city.

Taxis in London are identified as Black Cabs and they are also a good choice in that they can take you to some places where other means of transport cannot arrive at. One should keep an eye on unlicensed taxis which abound in the city. There are cabs companies that especially meant for women and they employ women drivers only.

It is a good alternative for tourists to buy a London Visitor Travel card which is accepted in the underground, Double Decker buses and others. There are different kinds of these travel cards and the one you choose will depend on your needs.

You can also choose the traditional big red Double Decker Bus that offers passengers an incredible tour around the city. The main advantage of buses over the underground is that as you travel you can enjoy the amazing sight of London. You can combine underground and bus services perfectly well. The only way of traveling at night is by bus.

Although it is not advisable, you can travel here and there driving your own car. This is not a very sensible option since you will have to tolerate terrible traffic jams, especially at rush hour. Another setback will be parking. There are not many available places for parking in the city and if you park in a forbidden place you can be severely fined.

If you don’t have a car of your own you can always hire one as long as you possess a driving license. Driving and traffic laws differ from country to country so be aware of speed limits, signs and seat belt use. To be allowed to drive in London you must be over 23 years old.
