Travel Greece Guide

On the southernmost tip of Europe, Greece enjoys not only mild Mediterranean weather and gorgeous beaches, but one of the world's richest and most fascinating historical cultures. The ancient capital city of Athens sits in the shadow of the great Acropolis, believed to be one of the world's spiritual epicenters.

The many islands off of the coast of Greece are steeped in tradition and home to the picturesque deep blue waters and white cliff-side homes we have all dreamed of. Olive groves, grape vines, cobblestone streets, accordion players, broken glasses and romance all come to mind when Greece is mentioned; and for good reason.

Off of the coast of Greece, and scattered throughout the Aegean and Ionian sea, are more than 6,000 islands. These islands make up a crucial part of Greece's culture and history, and are also some of Europe's most popular beach resort spots. The beaches of these islands are all dramatically different from one another, each catering to a different type of traveler.

Some of Greece's beaches consist of soft sand, and are packed with safe recreation for families. Other islands are known for their volcanic rock, caves, rough coastline, and potential for scuba diving, wind surfing and fishing. All of the populated islands offer accommodations and relaxation in a beautiful setting.

Athens is Greece's capital city, and was once one of the great cultural centers of the world. The hill in Athens on which the Acropolis is built has been in constant use since the Neolithic period. This beautiful cluster of monuments can be seen from many parts of Athens in the daytime and is illuminated at night.

In addition to the Acropolis, there are a number of other archaeological sites in downtown Athens which are worth seeing, and which the entrance fee to the Acropolis will give you access to. In addition to the historical sites, Athens is a bustling city filled with great eateries, a quaint antique and market district, winding cobblestone streets and deep culture.

Outside of Athens sits the majestic Mt. Olympus. Once believed to be the home of the Gods, this area was excavated in the 1800’s and many of the artifacts here, including the temple of Zeuss, were moved to the Louvre. In 776 BC, the first Olympic games were held here, in honor of Zeus and the winter and summer storms which occur here are said to remind visitors of the lightening-bolt wielding God himself, who continues to make his presence known in this powerful place.

Greek holidays have endless activities to offer travelers. Hopping from island to temple to museum to cruise ship could not be easier than in Greece; the land of the Ouzo, bikinis, grapes and Gods.
