The Greek island of Corfu is part of the group of seven Eptanisa Islands, and is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations off of the coast of Greece. Corfu is, among other things, the greenest Greek island with more than 3 million olive trees. Corfu is home to hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline, museums, archaeological sites and a busy metropolitan area. This semi-mountainous island sits in the Ionian Sea and is well known for its production of high quality dairy products; though the main industry here is tourism. Corfu is one of the most visited places in Greece, and is an especially popular spot for the yacht-owning rich and famous. The island has a relatively small native population and most residents work in the tourist industry; these locals are widely known for their friendliness and hospitality.
The town of Corfu was built in the Venetian style, and they are picturesquely scattered on the hillside, separated by narrow alleys in the classic Greek island style. The buildings here are known for their high roofs and flower-filled terraces. The town is also home to two forts, a lovely town square, beautiful public gardens, the famous Venetian-style government building and endlessly relaxing strolls.
On your visit to Corfu, it is recommended that you rent a car or motorbike. Outside of the main town, the island has a lot to offer. It is home to numerous Adriatic-style fishing villages which dot the coastline, as well as a plethora of hidden, romantic beaches accessible only by private vehicle. Get a map of the island and explore at your own pace, visit the Roman ruins or picnic in a field of wildflowers, or visit one of the island's natural preserved forest parks.
