Travel Santorini Guide

The island of Santorini (or Thira) in Greece is believed to be the home of the legend of Atlantis. The giant volcano which makes up the island erupted in 1650 BC and wiped out the ancient civilization of the Minoan people. This gorgeous island of beach resorts is one of the pricier spots in Greece, but is well worth the cost. With stunning beaches and the fascinating little towns of Fira and Oia along with the looming volcano and rich history it is no wonder Santorini is one of the top destinations for the world's rich and famous.

Long populated by highly-advanced civilizations; Santorini is home to a wealth of archaeological sites. Perhaps the most important archaeological site on the island is that of the city of Akrotira. This ancient city is so well-preserved and filled with artifacts that it is said to be the most important prehistoric settlement uncovered in the Mediterranean and has been referred to as the "Pompeii of the Aegean". The Minoan culture was Goddess-worshiping, and its art and artifacts are sought out by history-lovers around the world.

Of course, although its history is fascinating, Santorini is probably best-known for its beaches. The beaches cover the eastern and south-eastern side of the island, and each beach is unique. Because of the island's volcano, the sand on the beaches is highly varied. While some beaches are made up of shiny black smooth pebbles, others are made up of red sand and still others are sheer cliff.

The beaches near the town of Oia are difficult to reach and are known for their wild beauty, especially Bacedes and Koloumbos. Further south one will find the beaches of Monolithos, Avis and Kamari; popular family beaches. The island's most famous beaches are those of Perissa and Perivolos, black-sanded beaches covered with white umbrellas, sun-bathers, restaurants and hotels.

The island's main town is Fira; a beautifully unique little town built on the edge of a crater. Many of the houses on the island are originals from the 18th Century and are truly stunning against the backdrop of the deep blue Aegean Sea. There is a 600-step staircase which leads from the town to the harbor from where one can ride back on a cable car, or on the road by traditional donkey. Though small and isolated, this town is filled with nightclubs, hotels and restaurants. The town of Oia also sits atop a cliff, with stunning views and amazing sunsets. Both of these towns are lovely, traditional Greek towns with unusual locations.

Santorini is great for swimming, boating, museum-hopping and star-spotting. Whatever your travel needs, they can be met in Santorini, paradise in the Aegean Sea. Eventhough the island is small, we recommend to hire a car: Economy Car Hire
