Travel Dublin Guide

Ireland's largest and most culturally rich city, Dublin is home to ancient buildings, bustling pubs and beautiful beaches. Once the capital of the British Empire, Dublin is quickly re-inventing itself as a cultural center and is currently part of one of the world's strongest economies. Contrary to popular belief, Dublin is home to a diverse group of people from all over the world and is universally known as an extremely welcoming place. If you visit only one place while in Ireland, Dublin should be it.

Dublin is home to numerous museums including its most famous: the Irish Writer's Museum. Dublin is home to many sites of cultural importance that are museums in and of themselves. Malahide Castle lies within the city boundaries and is home to a small Irish museum and beautiful botanical gardens as well as the Fry Model Railway and the world's most elaborate doll house, Tara's Caslte, making it a perfect spot for a day trip with the whole family.

Dublin's pubs deserve a city of their own and on any given Saturday night one need only walk a kilometer or two to find a traditional Irish folk band playing to a captive and enthusiastic audience in a local pub. Dublin is not only famous for its pubs, but is home to Ireland's oldest pub, the "Brazen Head". Dublin is also home to arguably one of the world's best beers; Guinness. Beer lovers from around the world make pilgrimages to this totaling town for a tour of the Guinness brewery.

O'Connel Street may be Dublin's cultural hot spot. Home to the Hugh Lane Gallery of Modern Art, The Abbey National Theater and the James Joyce center O’Connel Street is a little ways down the road you will find the Dublin Spire, formerly the home of the Nelson Pillar.

Grafton Street, though small, is filled with wonderfully quaint music and art shops where you can spend endless hours browsing through Irish artisan crafts and antiques. Grafton street is also home to one of James Joyce's old haunts, Bewley's Oriental café, popularly known by Jocy's nickname for it; the "Lofty Clattery café".

Trinity College is the oldest University in Ireland. Its many beautiful stone buildings are draped in ivy; its grand and echoing halls are decorated with stained-glass windows, marble floors and staggeringly high ceilings. Trinity College is a museum in and of itself and is also home to the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript from the Ninth Century.

Simply walking around the streets of Dublin, a relatively small city, is sure to bring you to some interesting spots. Between pubs you may be lucky enough to come across the Oscar Wilde Memorial in Merrion square; a whimsical commemoration of one of Dublin's many ingenious artists. Visit the Wellington Monument at Phoenix park which contains the tallest obelisk in Europe (over 200 feet tall) in honor of the Duke of Wellington; the plaques at the bottom were cast from cannons captured at Waterloo.

The drinker, the bookworm and the drinking bookworms alike will find a home in Dublin; one of Europe’s most fun and welcoming cities.
