Travel Amalfi Coast Guide
The Southern Coast of Italy stretching from Positano to Vietro Sul Mare is known as the "Amalfi Coast". The coast is lined with steep mountains which tumble into the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. Stone houses, domed basilicas and winding trails paint the cliffs with classic Italian beauty and rustic flavor.
What makes this place so special, beyond the gorgeous sea and the stunning cliffs, are the small villages which speckle the mountains of the Amalfi Coast. Houses, churches and stores have been carved directly into the cliff faces. Terraced gardens, steep mountain paths and endless stairways make up these oddly beautiful and unique Italian villages; the like of which can be found no where else in the world.
A long-time favorite vacation spot for Europe's rich and famous; everyone dreams of driving their tiny red European sports car through the narrow mountain roads, catching fleeting glimpses of the cool, blue Mediterranean Sea and whizzing past quaint fishing villages. Or, for the more country-oriented, to push your bicycle, basket overflowing with bread and freshly caught fish, up a steep stone road to your scenic villa.
The Amalfi Coast consists of many towns, each with its own charm. Anacapri is home to the Blue Grotto, a fantastic water-filled cave in which, due to an odd positioning of the rocks, the water glows bright blue like the sky. In ancient Roman times, the Emperor Tiberius used this spot frequently and Roman statues can be found underneath the water.
The Island of Capri sits just off of the Amalfi Coast. When visiting the coast, the island deserves at least a day trip in order to hike the trail along the rear of the island for an excellent view of the famous twin rocks, the Faraglioni.
The largest town on the Amalfi Coast is the town of Amalfi itself. Amalfi was one of the great navel powers during the Byzantine era and its beautiful buildings are linked directly to its history of wealth. The town is famous for its white-washed courtyards, winding alleys and crumbling glory.
The Amalfi Coast is best visited in the summertime when one can bathe in the beautiful sea, lounge on the rocky beaches or take in the clear air and stunning views from the tops of the mountains. While many short tours exist, the best way to enjoy the Amalfi Coast is to pick a town and stay there for a period of time. Give yourself time to relax and take in this uniquely beautiful place, its worth all of the time you give it.
