Travel Cinque Terre Guide
Once upon a time there were five castles, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. These castles sat at equal distances from one another in the five mile stretch of land now known as Cinque Terre; five lands. This rocky coast line lies in Eastern Liguria and is naturally denoted on each end by natural rock promontories. The castles themselves were propped up on stones and the land is cut by stone walls which provide the arable space needed for growing grapes.
These unusual vineyards sit on precipitous slopes which have been terraced by the local residents since the beginning of its human occupation. Recently, Cinque Terre was named a National Park and has been protected by UNESCO as a special environmental zone. The climate in Cinque Terre is mild, and the mountains effectively shield the grapes from the wind. Because of the clear atmosphere, tourists are allowed amazing views of the frothy sea in the daytime, and the lights of the Versilian Coast at night.
The recommended stay in Cinque Terre is two nights and at least one full day. There are plenty of activities in this un-spoiled coastal range. Hiking, swimming, snorkeling and even scuba diving are all fun possibilities for your trip. The hike from Manarola to Riomaggiore is an excellent afternoon activity or you may choose to take a boat tour of the local villages.
Cinque Terre is accessible by train and consists of several villages. Check on accommodations before leaving as this is not the most popular tourist destination.
