Travel Florence Guide

Florence, or Firenze, was Italy's true political center during the late medieval period. The medieval style which shapes the city today is what makes it one of Italy's more memorable vacations spots. Its gorgeous skyline, many churches and museums and good weather also make Florence a great place to visit or to stay.

While in Florence, you will find that there is no lack of gorgeous churches and museums with which to fill your days. The best time to visit Florence is actually the low tourist season, October through April. The weather in Florence is never too bad in the winter, though the summer can be unbearably crowded and hot. You will also find that, as this is the off season, prices are lower and you will find yourself waiting in fewer lines at the attractions.

A classic sight in Florence is the Duomo di Santa Maria Del Fiore. This Cathedral is a classic Gothic piece of architecture which was finished in 1367. Inside the Cathedral you will find beautiful stained glass and classic statues, including one Michelangelo. Next to the Cathedral is the "Cupola", one of the biggest masonry domes ever built. This huge dome dots the Florence skyline and can be seen from almost anywhere in the city.

Another notable Florence landmark is the famous Uffizi Gallery. This art museum is believed to be one of the greatest in the world. Originally intended as an office building for the Medici family, the art collection expanded until it took over. With works by Cimabue, Giotto, Masaccio, Beato Angelico, Leonardo da Vinci, Boticelli, Michelangelo, Piero della Francesca, Raphael, Caravaggio and non-Italian artists such as Rubens, Rembrandt, Durer, Goya and numerous others. The Uffizi is home to Boticelli's "The Birth of Venus", perhaps one of the world's most famous images.

Connected by the "Vasari Corridor" to the Uffizi Gallery is the Pitti Palace. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, this palace has been home to all of Florence's ruling families including the Medicis and the Bonapartes. Surrounding a grand Piazza on three sides, the Pitti is a classic Renaissance palace constructed with rustic stone work. Like most buildings in Florence, the palace is filled with classic and beautiful works of art. Even the Vasari Corridor houses a grand collection of famous portraits.

Florence is truly a Mecca for lovers of Renaissance art. Every aspect of Florence reflects its artistic and rich history. A visit to Florence is sure to be romantic, artful and memorable for all.
