Travel Rome Guide
All roads lead to Rome, and a lot of airplanes will drop you there too. Possibly the most romantic city in the world, Rome is a top tourist destination and is home to the ancient, the ornate and the utterly delicious. They say to see everything that Rome has to offer would take years, and even a thorough trip through the Vatican can take several days. Nonetheless, Rome makes for a great holiday of any length and for any taste.
Possibly Rome's most notable piece of architecture, the Colosseum is a must-see. The largest Roman amphitheater, the Colosseum (alternately spelled Coliseum) could hold more than 50,000 spectators and was host to gruesome battles, trials and performances of all types. Located next to the Roman forum, one can make a day of visiting the ruins of this great empire. Hiring a tour guide is highly recommended, and tour guides are abundant. This will truly be an educational day, as these sights are rich in fascinating history.
The Vatican City, actually a country of its own, is located in the city of Rome. The Vatican is home to St. Peter's Cathedral and the Sistine Chapel. The Cathedral is free to enter and the chapel can be seen as a part of the Vatican museum. The gloriously ornate decorations adorning every inch of the Vatican City can be overwhelming, but stunning. One can spend days inside the walls of the Vatican and still find themselves unable to take everything in. Along with the Da Vincis and Raphaels, the Vatican is home to an extensive collection of Egyptian and Ancient Greek artifacts and is nearby many affordable Italian restaurants.
Along with seemingly endless churches and cathedrals, some notable Rome landmarks include the Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain and the many fountain-and-statue adorned piazzas throughout the city. The city center is relatively compact and should be explored on foot whenever possible. Each block of Rome's many small and winding stone streets reveals a new and beautiful site; stone angels soar high above the quaintly cobble stoned streets and a delicious cappuccino can be had in every café. Rome offers endless possibilities and is sure to be a rich and unforgettable experience.
