Travel Latvia Guide

As the Balkan countries join the European Union one by one, their beauties are uncovered by the world, and Latvia is no exception. Un-discovered Latvia makes for a unique and affordable country vacation.

Many Europeans are choosing to invest in Latvian summer homes, and for good reason! Latvia in the summer is no less than gorgeous; with pristine rivers and lakes and beautiful mountains capes, Latvia is a true old-world Europe experience and a perfect family getaway.

One of the few European countries spared from the destruction of World War 2, Latvia offers a true taste of old Europe in its art and surviving architecture. From medieval castles to Art nouveau; Latvia is home to many un-touched architectural treasures. Latvia is truly one of Europe’s secrets and will not remain the un-explored treasure it is today, for long.

Enjoy fresh goat cheese, grapes and delicious Latvian wine in the Pastoral hills and picturesque sunflower fields of Latvia's countryside. Many Latvians still live very simple lives, and it is not uncommon to be held up on a dirt road by a herd of sheep, or to be stuck behind a horse-drawn carriage piled high with corn. Take a drive down one of Latvia's winding country roads and accept an invitation for coffee and cake in the house of a local farmer and, if you are lucky, sample some home-made cherry brandy.

Latvia is a bread-basket country, with some surprisingly fertile farm land. It is no surprise then that Latvians make some of Europe's most delicious bread. Latvian bakers specialize in rye bread, and there is nothing quite like some hot, freshly baked rye bread purchased first thing in the morning and served with butter, cottage cheese and fresh fruit. Latvian pastries are more than noteworthy, with a throbbing national sweet tooth, there seems to be a bakery on every corner serving up rich Danish, colorful cakes and strong sugary coffee.

Riga has much to offer the modern European traveler who believes he has seen it all. Riga, though not commonly visited by tourists, is a beautiful old city with narrow streets reminiscent of Prague, gourmet restaurants catering to all tastes, five star hotels and world-class shopping. Riga's museums and beautiful architecture make it an ideal European city for the well-traveled and the non-traveler alike.

You will be sure to find the Latvian way of life refreshingly straight forward, and the country beautiful and fascinating. Windmill dotted hillsides surround un-kempt lakeside resorts and fishing villages just a short drive from Latvia's capital city, Riga. A Latvian holiday can easily combine the culture of a rich and interesting city and quaintness of a genuinely down-home country experience.
