Vilnius is the capital city of Lithuania, and its old town is one of the best-preserved in all of Europe. Like a movie set, Vilnius is set amongst the gorgeous green Lithuanian mountains and the winding, cobblestone streets are lined with ancient stone buildings. Quaint city squares, tiny taverns, strong coffee and sweet treats characterize this classically enchanting city.
Lithuania is, in fact, a coastal country and the stretch of beach along the Baltic Sea in Neringa makes for a perfect beach holiday. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this uniquely beautiful set of beaches is dotted with old-fashioned wooden fisherman's houses, sand dunes and rickety boats. Trakai is Lithuania's old capital, and, in the middle of Lake Galve sits a 14th century castle, on its own, tiny island. This castle/island is like no other, and warrants a visit on any Lithuanian vacation. The castle is now home to a Lithuanian museum and the surrounding town of Trakai is like a museum in itself. The scenic lake and many points of interest make Trakai the perfect day trip from Vilnius.
A relatively large country with a small population; Lithuania consists mostly of wild-lands. There are an abundance of lakes and lagoons and enchanting forests. Lithuania sits in the exact center of Europe, and the marker point is 26 Kilometers north of Vilnius, near an open-air museum.
