Vilnius Airport Guide
The Vilnius airport is small and surprisingly easy to get through. Though it currently handles a small number of passengers, just over 1 million each year, it is quickly expanding. As Lithuania has entered the European Union, flights have increased to Vilnius. New, low-cost inter-European airlines like Easyjet and Ryanair have introduced low-cost flights into Vilnius airport which have increased overall air traffic considerably.
Due to the growing popularity of Vilnius, the airport is expanding. In recent years, traffic through the Vilnius airport has grown a steady 30% each year and the airport itself is being expanded to hold 3 million passengers. A new wing to the airport should be completed within the next few years.
Vilnius airport is easily accessible from the city of Vilnius. A 15 minute drive which makes for a cheap taxi trip and an even cheaper trip by city bus. Without the over-crowding of other major European airports, you can expect to be off of your plane, through customs with luggage in hand in about 20 minutes; a phenomenally short time for an airport.
Built in the 1950’s, the main building of the Vilnius airport is much like the beautiful old buildings of Vilnius itself. The airport feels more like an opera house than an airport, and is decorated ornately with tall windows and chandeliers. The Vilnius airport, with its welcoming beauty, is a microcosm of the city itself.
