Travel Amsterdam Guide

Amsterdam is said to be the most colorful city in the world, and it may also be the strangest. This capital of the Netherlands is built entirely on land-fill in the midst of a completely water-logged country. Amsterdam is a city crossed with canals, dotted with picture-perfect water-front houses, veined by bicycle paths, filled with quaint pubs and home to the intriguing Red Light district. It is no wonder that Amsterdam is one of Europe's most popular destinations.

Amsterdam consists of tens of small neighborhoods, each with their own character and charm. The neighborhood of Zeedjick, in the Red Light District, is one such neighborhood worth visiting. Home to Amsterdam's oldest church, the ruins of the medieval city walls, the chapel of St. Olaf and a number of pubs and delicious Chinese restaurants, the Zeedjick is well worth a stroll or day trip.

Walking the streets of Amsterdam will bring you across many Bruine cafés. These small taverns serve up large mugs of local, rich beer, French fries with garlic mayonnaise, fried fish and other such local specialties. Stop in a cozy Bruine for a beer and a snack after a long day of sightseeing: many of these old buildings are monuments themselves! On your walks you will also come across numerous small art galleries where you may pick up a piece by the world's next Rembrandt.

Amsterdam is also home to the former house of Anne Frank. The Anne Frank house has been converted into a museum, and the Frank living quarters have been preserved as they were found and the building next door has been converted into a museum. Each year there is a special exhibit in the museum related to one aspect of WWII. The house is located in the center of the city.

Amsterdam is also home to a beautiful water-side palace, exhibiting magnificent murals and architecture when open to the public. Many travel to Amsterdam to purchase diamonds, and the city is home to many famous diamond factories due to Holland's central role in the diamond industry. When in Amsterdam it is important not to miss the city's pride and joys; the botanical gardens, the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the city's ancient zoo.

There is an endless array of activities awaiting you in this strange and enchanting city. With an outer coat of great art and a swampy underside (in more ways than one) Amsterdam is a dynamic city that will never fail to surprise and delight you.
