Restaurants Amsterdam Guide

The Netherlands are the homeland of Gouda cheese and Heineken beer, two great basics which set the tone for Amsterdam dining. The restaurants of Amsterdam serve up regional and international cuisine for a wide range of clientele. With a large number of immigrants, especially from Africa and the Middle East, the food of Amsterdam is an interesting amalgamation of flavors; with local cheeses, foreign spices and international appeal.

For a high end and authentic Amsterdam dining experience, head to Pulitzers (Keizersgracht 234, Tel: 020 523 52 35). The private dining room of this restaurant is located inside of an old pharmacy, and the whole building feels ancient. The food is regional and gourmet and the wine list is extensive. In the summertime, enjoy the lovely outdoor patio.

The Dutch are well known for their pancakes, and perhaps the best place to eat an authentic Dutch pancake is Amsterdam's Pancake Bakery (Prinsengracht 191, Tel 020 625 1333). With both sweet (banana, Nutella, strawberries and cream) and savory (basil tomato, spicy sausage) pancakes, you can enjoy the Pancake Bakery any time. The restaurant is located in an old brick building, with a rustic feel and filled with original pieces of art work.

Located in the city's ancient gate house, De Waag restaurant (Nieuwmarkt 4, Tel (020) 422-7772) serves up Flemish cuisine with a new-world twist: all of its ingredients are both local and organic. De Waag has an arrangement with local farmers to ensure that its produce is fresh and organic, and its livestock is well-treated. In the fifteenth century the city of Amsterdam was surrounded by a protective wall and while the wall itself is currently in ruins, the gate house is going strong as one of Amsterdam's best restaurants.

The "Supperclub" (Jonge Roelensteeg 21, Tel 31 20 344 64 00) is a classically hip and uniquely Amsterdam eatery. Seating consists of luxurious mattresses which line the walls, the music is techno, the lighting is soft and the entertainment is drag queens. The Supperclub has a fixed menu consisting of several courses and the food is excellent. Visit the coffee shop across the street before arrival to whet your appetite.

In addition to the aforementioned restaurants, there are endless options for diners in all price ranges throughout Amsterdam. During the day, you may prefer to visit a street stand selling falafel, Kebab or pizza while the night-time pub fare is surprisingly satisfying. Whatever your tastes or budget, Amsterdam has the delicious and unique dining experience for you.
