Travel Maastricht Guide

Known as the oldest city in the Netherlands, Maastricht has been populated continuously since the middle ages and has been an official city since 1204. The city itself is filled with museums and art covers the street with statues and stone carvings at every turn. In addition to being the Netherlands' oldest city, Maastricht is known as the "city of culture", with a wealth of theater, art and gorgeous architecture.

Maastricht's best museum is the Bonnefanten museum. One section of the museum is occupied by the "Old Masters" and highlights Flemish paintings of the 16th and 17th century, in addition there are early Italian pieces and Maastricht silver pieces. The second floor holds of contemporary works of art. The building itself is impressive; a modernist-style domed building designed by Aldo Rossi.

The National History museum in Maastricht holds some of the Netherland's oldest and most fascinating artifacts. The majority of the artifacts are from the late Cretaceous, and this collection is one of the most extensive of its kind in the world. The museum also has a display of the contemporary flora and fauna of the area and a great kids exhibit for those traveling with children.

The twice-weekly market held in downtown Maastricht attracts visitors from around Europe. In addition to the outdoor market, there is an endless array of shops located on the historic back streets of the city which provide for a uniquely historical shopping experience. In 2004 Maastricht was voted the best shopping in the Netherlands with an abundance of old-world crafts and a smattering of modern designer stores.

Historical sites, beautiful streets and great shopping are only a small part of this intriguing city. An old town with new appeal, Maastricht is not to be missed on any trip to the Netherlands.
