Travel Portugal Guide

Portugal is located in the Iberian Peninsula in the south west extreme of Europe. At east and north it borders on Spain and at west and south it borders on the Atlantic Ocean. It is a small country with an area of 35672 square miles and a population of ten million people. Although it is quite small, this country is home to a wide range of geographical features alternating between plain and mountainous regions.

Portugal is divided into six regions:

The Green Coast area, which is rich in agriculture thanks to heavy rainfalls, presents a unique landscape combined with the greenest hills, and mountains, and productive valleys. The beaches of this zone are unpolluted and you can take pleasure in visiting the vineyards, forests, the farms and the countryside. The principlal cities of the region are Braga, Guimarães, Viana do Castelo and Porto. If go to this region you must go to the National Park of Peneda-Gerês which possesses a great diversity of flora and fauna.

Mountains region, located in the northeast of Portugal displays a clear and pure countryside. In this region you can go to Trás-os-Montes and Serra da Estrella, which is the highest range of mountains. You can visit small towns and traditional places such as Bragança, Viseu, Castelo Branco and Monsanto among others. This region is an excellent place for walking and enjoying the incredible view.

Silver coast is characterized by the most extraordinary architectural styles; you can also visit traditional historical and religious places. This region is located in the center of Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean bathes its deserted beaches. There are fishing towns and villages in the area such as Nazar. Other cities you can’t miss are Coimbra, Aveiro and Leiria.

Plains region extends from the plains of Ribatejo to Alentejo occupying one-third of Portugal. Santarém, which is the capital of Ribatejo, is a historical city where you can enjoy its agricultural fairs. Èvora is another beautiful city with narrow streets and historical sites which has been established as part of the World Heritage by UNESCO.

Algarve region is the most popular tourist district in Portugal, its beaches are beautiful and they are warm due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. There are two main nature reserves in this region: the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa and the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e da Costa Vicentina.

Costa de Lisboa, where the capital city of the country is located, enjoys a warm and dry climate all year round. Some of the places you must visit are the Castle of St. George, the Tower and the Monastery of the Hieronymites, the village of Cascais and the town of Sintra among others.
