This city, located on the South of Portugal, maintains its Moorish origin which can be perceived in the architecture and atmosphere of the place. In the past this region was difficult to reach but this is not a problem at the present since a new road has been built and you can also access the city by plane.

You can get to Algarve from different part in Europe. There is an important infrastructure of motorways and roads that make the trip pleasant and trouble free. Of course, at high season you may probably have to deal with traffic jams.

Traveling by plane is a good and comfortable option. International flights arrive at Faro Airport which is 4 kilometers from the terminal. Rail services also reach the city thanks to the rail network which Portugal is part of and which connects most capital cities in Europe.

The best time of the year to go to Algarve is in the spring and in the fall. During this period you will be able to swim in the warm sea without having to cope with crowded beaches.

The main tourist attractions are Barlevento, Central Coast and Sotavento. You can go to Albufeira which is a fishing village full of bars, restaurants and shops prepared for tourism. Aljezur is a small and quiet place to visit and it is situated in a rich valley, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. There are many other locations you can go to such as Lagoa, Monchique, Faro, Lagos, Portimão, Silves, Tavira and Vilamoura among others.

Apart from the magnificent landscapes and tourist attractions that this town houses, you can enjoy its gastronomy as well. Algarve’s cuisine highlights fish and seafood. You must try the wide range of traditional and international dishes this place offers. One of the most popular dishes are: Cataplana made with clams, ham, onion, garlic, spices, and white wine; Cabrito estufado is another traditional dish which is a stew with potatoes, tomatoes, peas and onions; Caldereida is a fish and seafood stew; and Lomo de porco with clams among others.

On the subject of drink, Algarve’s wines are fruity, smooth and with a high level of alcohol. The best thing to do is to taste Lagoa, Lagos and Tavira wines. Finer wines are Dão or the Alentejo reds. Local brand beer is found there but you can also try imported British beer as well.
