In the direct center of Europe sits Slovakia, a mountainous country with a wealth of natural beauty and a fascinating culture. Though often overlooked by travelers, Slovakia offers everything but the beach for vacationers from all over Europe and the world. With a rustic countryside dotted by castles, seemingly endless walking trails and ancient villages that resemble a journey back in time, Slovakia is the most un-touched and pristine European country.
On the gorgeous Danube river sits Slovakia's Devín Castle. From the top of the hillside behind the castle one has a view of Austria and Hungary and the wild-flower-covered fields of Slovakia itself. The castle was built in Roman times, and has its own romantic fairy tale of unrequited love. Stay at the hotel at the base of the castle or take a day trip from Bratislava.
The largest city in Slovakia is Bratislava; though not a large city at all, this capital is classically Eastern European and is filled with Gothic buildings, cobblestone squares and culturally rich museums. Zilina is another popular Slovakian destination. Located in the Vah river valley, this old-style town looks like it might be populated by elves, gnomes and Santa Clause. The town square is home to an ice-skating rink for much of the year and the entire town is overlooked by a looming castle on a nearby hill.
The most frequent types of travelers to Slovakia are people who wish for an authentic Eastern European experience. Traveling by train through the countryside is in itself an experience, and stopping along the way to enjoy hiking trails and some local goat-cheese dumplings may just make your experience complete.
While traveling in Slovakia, do not be surprised to come across an accordion player in native dress, or a gypsy with a dancing bear. Slovakia is a destination for the curious and adventurous traveler, and it is the fleetingly un-touched feeling of Slovakia that makes it so appealing.
