Travel Bratislava Slovakia Guide
Set between the Carpathian mountains and the Danube river; Bratislava is Slovakia's beautiful capital city. With a wealth of museums, a gorgeous castle and stunningly well-preserved architecture throughout; Bratislava is like a secret Prague. Just a few miles from Hungary, Bratislava has a rich and complicated political history. It was a favorite spot of Franz Lizst and has a well-known and lively opera house.
Bratislava's "Old City" is overflowing with museums and spots of historical interest. On the banks of the Danube, the Old City is home to the Slovak National Museum, the Slovak National Art Gallery, The Wine Museum, and the city palaces. There are also opportunities here to eat in a 300-year-old pub or simply buy a Slovakian sausage from a friendly street vendor.
The city square, Hviezdoslavovo Nmestie, sits between Old Town, the Danube, and the castle. On any given day with pleasant weather, one can find young couples strolling and old men playing chess in this traditional city square. Just east of here travelers will find a plethora of reasonably-priced hotels and eateries and everything in need is just a short stroll from here.
On the banks of the Danube, in the city proper of Bratislava, sits the stunning Bratislava castle. The spot on which the castle was built was originally home to settlements dating back to 600 BC. The castle itself was built during Roman times and has switched hands many times in during its rich lifetime. Recently renovated, parts of the castle are now home to the Slovak National Museum, and some fascinating artifacts are stored here.
Beyond castles and museums, one can get the greatest feel for Bratislava by simply walking the streets. The city has been so isolated for so many years that it tends to make you feel like you are on another planet; rather than just another corner of Eastern Europe. Come and experience Bratislava's unique charm for yourself.
