Travel Alicante Guide

Alicante claims to have the best weather in all of Spain. Sitting on the Costa Blanca, on the East coast of Spain, Alicante is the starting point for many beach vacationers. Because Alicante is home to the region's biggest airport, many travelers begin their journeys in Alicante, and many never leave.

Alicante has been populated since the third century BC, and fascinating artifacts have been discovered there. It is no wonder that this pleasant place has been in use for so many years; the weather never gets too cold or too hot, and the surrounding nature is pristine and beautiful. The 18th Century castle which overlooks the city, along with the unique architecture, wealth of museums and, of course, near perfect beaches make Alicante one of the most welcoming cities in all of Spain.

Alicante is home to the Castillo de Santa Barbara, the largest medieval fortress in all of Europe. This fortress is hard to miss, as it takes up much of the peak of the Benacantil Mountain which sits majestically above the city. The view from the fortress is the best in the area, as from the peak of the mountain one can see Alicante's coastline, as well as the surrounding farmland and the road to the castle itself is surrounded by local, beautiful pine trees. Within the castle you will find a museum of artifacts found in the area and the monument itself is home to a wealth of history.

Alicante's Playa de San Juan is believed to be the best beach in Spain. The beach itself is 5 Km long and relatively wide, with fine, golden sand. Along the beach you will find all of the amenities of modern holiday apartments including dressing rooms, restaurants, bars, equipment rentals and even a full golf course. Several small, difficult to access coves on the Playa de San Juan are reserved as nude beaches and the still waters on the rest of the beaches make them safe for families and water sports.

The fascinating Tabarca Islands sits close to the coast of Alicante, and has a very old and interesting history. Populated since the times of the ancient Greeks, this island was once a hideout for Berber Pirates. The pristine waters, ruins of an ancient fort and high quality restaurants on the island make it a perfect day trip from Alicante, with frequent ferries leaving from the Alicante port.

Alicante's proximity to the best beaches in Spain, busy harbor, easy access, abundance of resources and interesting museums and monuments make it an ideal tourist destination. If visiting the Costa Blanca for the first time, or the fiftieth, Alicante is the city to stay in.
