Travel Turkey Guide
Not only is it the land of Constantinople, one of the oldest civilizations in the world, but Turkey is a large and beautiful country with numerous World Heritage Sites, Mediterranean beaches, rich history and incredible landscapes. While Turkey has long been a vacation spot for travelers from Western Europe, it has only recently become a destination for the rest of the world.
Istanbul, Turkey is home to some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the world. The world-famous Blue Mosque and the Agha Sofia church are just two of the stunning and ancient buildings which can be found in downtown Istanbul. Other spots of historical interest here include Topkapi Palace, the ornate home to Turkey's many wealthy rulers, includes a museum containing many important Muslim artifacts and the adjacent archaeological museum contains the world's most extensive collections of local historical objects.
There is much to see when you travel to Turkey beyond gorgeous and fascinating Istanbul. During the summertime, popular beach resorts such as Olimpos are host to young tourists from around the world enjoying their stays in tree house hostels and eating figs and grapes on the warm shores of the Turqoise Coast. A beach holiday in Turkey means much more than margaritas on the sand as even the beach towns are scattered with ancient marble ruins and lush Mediterranean foliage.
If it is a historical trip that you are after; you may find that Turkey's ancient ruins are better preserved and less overrun with tourists than those of Greece or Italy. Near the coast in South West Turkey you will find the ancient city of Ephesus. Ephesus is said to have been visited by Jesus and was once home to the Library of Artemis; one of the seven wonders of the world. Nearly empty of tourists in the off-season, this fig-try lined outdoor museum is an unforgettable trip back in time.
Inland Turkey, though mountainous and windy, is home to another fascinating site: Nemrut Mountain. This ancient tomb was built in the First Century BC and is home to enormous statues of then King Antiochus, Apollo, Fortuna, Heracles and Zeus. The heads have since tumbled off of the enormous statues and stand where they fell, each an incredible 2 meters high. Some have argued that this strange spot be named the Eighth Wonder of the World.
The City of Cappadoccia cannot be done justice in words. This inland Turkish city is made up of a labrynth of caves, tunnels and strange rock formations. From the 4th to the 13th Century AD city dwellers dug into the lava rock and created homes, stores and churches that were, essentially, "underground" and were entered through chimneys in the roof. Tourists today can explore this odd, subterranean village and take in the stunning surrounding scenery.
There are tens of other heritage sites throughout this large country which, in addition to a rich history Turkey has a pleasant climate, many different geographical features and delicious cuisine. All of Turkey is accessible by a well-organized bus system and is affordable all-around.
